Ludwig von Bertalanffy Forerunner of Evolutionary Systems Theory

Ludwig von Bertalanffy is known as founding father of the General System Theory (GST). When Ludwig von Bertalanffy created his GST amidst the last century, he was able to overcome the deep cleft between the controversial theoretical approaches to biology – mechanicism and vitalism. He did so by formulating laws of organisation ruling biota and after generalising them he successfully applied them to different domains such as medicine, psychology, psychotherapy. Methodologically, Bertalanffy revived synthesis, ontologically, he advocated perspectivism, and, ethically, he was humanist. His main concern was the fate of the human civilisation and the new way of thinking necessary for the survival of mankind. Evolutionary systems theory thus is the most recent elaboration of Bertalanffy’s original GST-ideas. “Unity through diversity” is the motto that holds for evolutionary systems theory, too – epistemologically, ontologically, and ethically, if it takes advantage of categories of dialec...

There Is a Way to Make General Systems the Unifying Framework of the Sciences

From Bertalanffy to Discipline-Independent-Transdisciplinarity

Vincent Vesterby

When Bertalanffy advocated a new scientific discipline called general system theory, this generalist mode of understanding was to be based on the isomorphism of laws, principles, and models in the different sciences, and on structural uniformities (isomorphies) in the subject matters of those sciences. There is a conceptual shift in Bertalanffy’s work from the logico-mathematical mode to a deeper more complex understanding. There is a corresponding shift in the understanding of isomorphies from the isomorphy of laws and principles to the isomorphy of qualities of real systems. The recognition of isomorphies in real situations and systems has resulted in the creation of the modern generalist mode of understanding and from there the development of discipline-independent-transdisciplinarity. This paper gives an introduction to this form of transdisciplinarity, and explains how this mode of understanding naturally develops a universal transdisciplinary language.

Tourism Theory Concepts, Models and Systems (2024)

FAQs

What are the models of tourism theory? ›

There are few types of theoretical models of tourism; descriptive models, explanatory models and predictive models (Chorley and Haggett 1967). A descriptive model depicts the tourism system while explanatory model illustrates how the system and subsystem function.

What are the 5 concepts of tourism? ›

The five vital components of tourism system are Attraction, Accessibility, Accommodation, Amenities and Activities. a) Attraction: Tourism activity starts with the attractions. At a place or destination there has to be some attraction only then people or tourists will visit that area.

What is the basic concept of tourism system? ›

A group of interrelated, interdependent and interacting three basic elements – tourists, geographical elements (traveller generating region, tourist destination region and transit route region) and tourism industry – that together form a single functional structure.

What is the general systems theory of tourism? ›

The Systems Approach

Systems theory has been applied to tourism by a few researchers since the beginning of the 1980s. Leiper (1979) uses general systems theory to develop a holistic framework for understanding and managing tourism. He proposes that this system comprises geographic and social elements.

What are the four basic concepts of tourism? ›

In the tourism concept, there are four aspects (4ª : Attraction, Accessibility, Amenities, Ancilary) that must be considered in tourism offers [25] . These aspects are as follows: Attraction is a tourist destination to attract tourists that has attractions, both natural attractions and people and culture [26]. ...

What are the theories and models? ›

Theories are plausible explanatory propositions devised to link possible causes to their effects. Generally, models are schematic representations of reality or of one's view of a possible world, constructed to improve one's understanding about the world and/or to make predictions.

What are the 7 pillars of tourism? ›

To meet this objective and at the core of the National tourism policy of 2002 is outlined the seven pillars of tourism, Swagat (Welcome), Soochana (Information), Suvidha (Facilitation), Suraksha (Safety), Sahyog (Cooperation), Samrachanam (Infrastructure Development) and Safai ( cleanliness).

What are the three main objectives of tourism? ›

The three main objectives for tourism are: economic development, social and cultural enrichment, and environmental sustainability. Each of these objectives is vitally important to the hospitality industry.

What are the three key concepts of general systems theory? ›

General system theory introduced key concepts such as open and closed systems, stressing the role and importance of context and environment, equifinality, or the way systems can reach the same goal through different paths, and isomorphisms or structural, behavioral, and developmental features that are shared across ...

What are the three main points of general systems theory? ›

According to the 'Old School' that never happened, the key points of systems theory are: (1) The system is a metaphor. (2) The metaphor has meaning. (3) There are many forms of significance (logical, formal, ethical, ritual, etc).
