What makes this recipe work?

The flavors. I love sweet and spicy foods, and this one works! I promise once you try this pineapple barbecue sauce, you will be hooked too! It is a Hawaiian BBQ sauce.

If you have not tried a homemade BBQ sauce, you might be surprised at just how simple it can be. Honestly, this sauce takes only about 10-15 minutes of hands-on time.

This sauce holds well for up to 5 days! So make it ahead of time and you can use it when you need it.

I love this sauce on my favorite meats, grilled chicken, pork ribs, and even your favorite burger. If you are vegetarian or vegan, this also works on grilled veggies too!

Ingredients

It is kind of a long list of ingredients, but don't be intimidated.

  • Pineapple juice- I used canned juice for this.
  • Soy Sauce- make sure to use a low-sodium sauce. If not, this sauce gets salty.
  • Tomato paste- make sure that you use paste, not sauce. This will give you that rich deep flavor.
  • Honey-
  • Molasses- I don't use much, but it adds to the deep rich flavor you are looking for.
  • Brown sugar- I love the blend of both brown sugar and honey.
  • Worchestershire sauce- It won't take much, but necessary in this recipe.
  • Garlic powder- is one of the few spices I use in this recipe.
  • Black pepper and salt
  • Pineapple chunks- I used canned pineapple chunks as it was easy, but you can also use fresh pineapple if you want.
  • Crushed red pepper- you can also use cayenne pepper if you want. It doesn't take much but will give the sauce that hint of spice
  • Cornstarch- this is used as a thickener in the recipe.

How to make

You are not going to believe just how simple it is to make homemade barbecue sauce. So easy!

Add all of your ingredients into a food processor or blender. If you want chunks in your sauce, skip this step. I like my sauce smooth though, so I pulse it. You can also use a blender if you want.

Once it is pulsed, add the ingredients to a medium-size pan. Cook the sauce over medium heat, stirring frequently. The sauce will burn if you don't keep an eye on it.

Cook until it starts to boil, at this point, the sauce should be thickened.

Remove from the heat and it is ready to go. If you aren't planning on using it right away, you can store this in the fridge in an airtight container, or mason jars.

How To Use

I love to use this on my grilled meats. So, grill those pork chops, chicken thighs or breasts, burgers, etc. When they are a few minutes away from being done, brush them generously with the barbeque sauce and continue to grill.

This is also great for shishkabobs too. At the end of the cooking time, brush them with the hot sauce and you have taken them to the next level.

Notes

  • You can use either fresh or canned pineapple. They both produce a great sauce.
  • This sauce makes a really fun food gift. Pour your homemade sauce into a mason jar or other glass jar. Tie it with a pretty ribbon and label it. It is simple to make and something your friends and family will appreciate!
  • I love making this ahead of time as it will hold well for at least 5 days! You can easily make this ahead of time. Make sure to store it in the fridge in an airtight container.
  • Make sure when you use this for grilling that you do not add it to your food too early. The sauce will burn if added too early with all the sugars not only from the honey but also in the pineapple.
  • You could use this pineapple BBQ sauce in place of teriyaki with my grilled chicken. Or even on these salmon burgers.
