1 Choose your topic
The first step is to decide what you want to teach and who you want to teach it to. Think about your target audience, their needs, goals, and challenges. What problem can you help them solve? What skills or knowledge can you help them acquire? What value can you offer them? Choose a topic that you are passionate about, that you have experience in, and that is in demand. You can use tools like Google Trends, Amazon Kindle, or Udemy to research popular and trending topics.

Before selecting a topic, it's essential to thoroughly assess the needs, challenges, and common misconceptions prevalent among your target audience. Understanding the difficulty level required to tackle these issues is paramount. Opt for a topic that not only addresses these concerns effectively but also captivates and excites your audience, prompting them to eagerly participate and learn.

I would actually start with looking into your strengths and passions. In my experience, the journey of course creation, while rewarding, can be quite demanding. It's your passion that will sustain you through the challenging moments and ensure your content resonates with genuine enthusiasm. After identifying what drives you, the next crucial step is understanding your students' needs. Can you pinpoint specific challenges they face? The most impactful courses are those that not only impart knowledge but also provide practical, actionable steps to help students overcome their challenges and achieve tangible outcomes. This approach not only enriches the learning experience but also leaves students with a sense of achievement and progress.

2 Plan your content
The next step is to plan your content and structure your course. You need to define your learning objectives, outcomes, and assessments. What do you want your learners to know, do, and feel by the end of your course? How will you measure their progress and success? You also need to break down your content into manageable and logical modules and lessons. Each module should have a clear purpose, a specific topic, and a coherent flow. Each lesson should have a clear goal, a concise explanation, and a meaningful activity.

When devising the content and structure of your course, it's vital to consider whether a physical space is necessary, particularly for hands-on practical elements aligned with the course objectives. Explore alternative approaches that can achieve the same outcomes without relying on physical infrastructure, ensuring that the learning experience remains effective and the objectives are met.

When planning the course content, I would break it down into bite-sized pieces to keeping learners engaged and motivated. Based on my experience, videos that span 10-15 minutes strike a good ration of depth without been overwhelming. This format respects the learner's time and attention span, making complex information more approachable. I would take a similar approach to the activities, I would design them to be completed within 15-20 minutes to encourage participation without overwhelming students. These shorter, focused segments not only aid in retention but also fit into the busy schedules of adult learners, making continuous education a more accessible and enjoyable journey.

3 Choose your format
The third step is to choose your format and delivery method. You need to decide how you will present your content and interact with your learners. You can use different formats such as text, video, audio, images, slides, quizzes, surveys, etc. You also need to decide how you will deliver your course, whether it will be self-paced, instructor-led, or blended. You need to consider the pros and cons of each option, such as flexibility, engagement, feedback, etc. You also need to choose a platform or tool that suits your needs and budget, such as Teachable, Thinkific, Kajabi, etc.

I always use a mix of formats (like videos, texts, quizzes, etc) because it addresses diverse learner styles and enriches the course. Reflect on whether you want a self-paced or tutor-led course. You can also leveraging forums for interaction, not all courses need live sessions. For beginners, I would suggest using platforms like Teachable to launch easily, so you can concentrate on crafting engaging content and keep the focus on enriching your students' learning journey.

4 Create your materials
The fourth step is to create your materials and resources. You need to produce high-quality and engaging content that matches your format and delivery method. You need to use clear and simple language, attractive and relevant visuals, and interactive and diverse elements. You also need to provide additional resources that support your content, such as worksheets, checklists, guides, etc. You need to use tools that help you create and edit your materials, such as Canva, Camtasia, Audacity, etc.

5 Test your course
The fifth step is to test your course and get feedback. You need to make sure that your course works well, that it is easy to access and navigate, that it is free of errors and glitches, and that it meets your learning objectives and outcomes. You also need to get feedback from your target audience, such as beta testers, peers, or mentors. You need to ask them for honest and constructive feedback on your content, format, delivery, and overall experience. You need to use tools that help you collect and analyze feedback, such as Google Forms, SurveyMonkey, Hotjar, etc.

To ensure thorough testing and gather comprehensive feedback, it's crucial to select a diverse group of testers. This includes individuals with varying learning paces, ranging from slow to fast learners, as well as audiences with different learning disabilities. By incorporating this diversity, you can maximize the reach of your testing efforts and capture insights from a broad spectrum of potential users.

6 Launch your course
The final step is to launch your course and market it. You need to set a launch date and a price for your course. You need to create a landing page and a sales page that showcase your course and persuade your potential learners to enroll. You also need to create a marketing strategy and a launch plan that help you reach and attract your target audience. You need to use tools that help you promote and sell your course, such as email marketing, social media, webinars, etc.

Take some online courses before any of the above steps! Not watching some mandatory training videos before taking a quiz - but actual online courses. Rarely does a new teacher walk into a physical classroom without having experienced that environment as a student. The same should be true online. Just navigating online platforms is a challenge - and that's before delving into content. I completed my masters online in the early 2000s and am currently in an online licensure program; I can attest to how quickly being an online learner will teach you the increased importance of organization, clarity, responsiveness, and consistency in online courses.
