12 Rarest Engines Ever Fitted In An American Muscle Car (2024)

Finding a rare muscle car is relatively easy, due to manufacturers making many limited-run specials that didn't demand a huge outlay to build. Examples are models like the Ford Mustang Boss 429, which used the same engine Ford utilized in models such as the Thunderbird and Mercury Cougar. Finding rare engines can be more difficult for this reason though, so HotCars scoured the archives to find the 12 most exclusive powerplants ever found under the hood of a muscle car.

How we made our selections: HotCars looked only at engines featured in muscle cars, with no power figures being taken into account. Trusted sources have been used to provide accurate production figures, with the ranking ordered from least to most rare.

While around 500 were built at the time, just three found their way into road cars. A trio of Galaxie muscle cars were the lucky recipients of the beastly 616 hp engine, with one of them selling for a hefty $112,000 through Bonhams Auctions in 2019.

A 300-hp powerhouse resulted, though it was only ever used in the limited-run SVT Cobra R, of which 250 were made before production ended at the end of 1995.

Like its fellow American manufacturers, Ford was desperate to come out on top of the drag racing wars with its own muscular offerings. One of its most notorious efforts was the Ford Fairlane Thunderbolt, which had a NASCAR-bred 427 ci engine. Producing 425 hp, the engine was 1 of only 100 top-oiler, low-riser dual-four barrel carburetor engines of its type that Ford ever produced. All came under the hood of the insane limited-run Thunderbolt.

The all-aluminum engine cost the equivalent of $35,000 in today's money alone, so only 69 examples of the valuable car were ever built. A further two found a home in the Corvette sports car, its high price hamstringing it even more than the Camaro.
